EMBRACING AUTHENTICITY with KRISTINA MAND-LAKHIANI
Do you embrace every facet of your authentic self? What does authenticity really even mean?
International speaker, entrepreneur, artist, philanthropist, mother, and cofounder of Mindvalley, Kristina Mand-Lakhiani, joins me to discuss her new book, “Becoming Flawesome” and how we can begin embracing authenticity.
Listen in to hear more about Mindvalley, where authenticity comes from and what it truly is, how we can remain authentic when different parts of our lives are clashing, how you can still experience imposter syndrome despite being authentic, and more!
Topics We Discuss:
[1:15] Kristina’s career path. When she married her former husband, she left behind her country and career to start Mindvalley from scratch with him. She wasn’t initially passionate about self-help, but grew to love it. Her new book, “Becoming Flawesome”, embodies the unconventional path she’s taken and diverges from many traditional structures of self-help novels.
[5:08] Mistakes in the self-help industry. It’s often romanticized, surface-level, and dogmatic. The book isn’t meant to tear down the self-help industry, but she isn’t afraid to acknowledge where it sometimes comes up short.
[6:34] Success vs happiness. Many people subconsciously associate being successful with being “good” and chase this to be liked thinking that will bring them happiness. Happiness is more abstract, success is more easily quantifiable. Hustle culture and the idea of flow are two sides of the same coin of productivity, which are tied to success. Kristina wants people to look past these two entirely and look at happiness.
[13:13] Understanding authenticity. Authenticity is the result of your relationship with yourself. Many people try to put on a show for others, but tending to ourselves paves the way for us to feel strong in who we are. Our relationships with others can also help us come back into ourselves.
[22:41] Are masks counter to authenticity? Masks are required for social interaction with the world, and are normal. They are separate from who you are and your relationship with yourself. The problem is overidentifying with one facet of ourself and disowning the rest of who we are which leads to distortion of our reality.
[26:50] Balancing conflicting life roles. Maintaining integrity and aligned intentions helps you keep your center in moments when it can be hard to balance multiple roles. For example, when firing a friend.
[29:58] Imposter syndrome & compassion. You can be authentic and believe you are worthless at the same time. Authenticity is not the cure for imposter syndrome, being kind to yourself is. Kindness with ourselves is easy when we’re doing well, but we need this compassion more when we are not doing well. Replace your judgment with curiosity. This is the therapeutic process. Hone in on the what and why.
[36:00] Personal transformation. Truly changing requires applying knowledge and experience, as well as support. Kristina believes transformation is a trainable skill. What you focus on determines your reality, and honing what you focus in on can lead to more transformation.
